CentOS是Linux发行版之一，它是来自于Red Hat Enterprise Linux依照开放源代码规定发布的源代码所编译而成。由于出自同样的源代码，因此有些要求高度稳定性的服务器以CentOS替代商业版的Red Hat Enterprise Linux使用。
RHEL 7 将于 2024 年 6 月 30 日结束维护。2024 年 6 月 30 日之后，CentOS Linux 7 将不再发布更新。
2021 年 12 月 31 日，CentOS Linux 8 已正式终止服务，CentOS 8 也会成为最短命的 CentOS 系统，以后的发展重心都会转移到 CentOS Stream 项目上面。
CentOS 8 的终止，意味着以后都是 CentOS Stream 的天下了，也就是说，CentOS Stream 它是 RHEL 的一个上游分支，而之前的 CentOS Linux 是基于 RHEL 重建的下游分支，现在完全反过来了，看起来，CentOS Stream 貌似成了 RHEL 企业付费版的测试版本，可靠性、稳定性肯定不及 CentOS Linux。
建议使用 Rocky Linux 或 Alma Linux 发行版，完全兼容RHEL发行版，Rocky Linux 是CentOS之父基于RHEL下游发行版本，可以看作是 CentOS 的延续版本。
